One of our EMAS-certified businesses, Hotel Fuchsbräu in Beilngries, Germany, recently shared its path toward EMAS certification with Click. Magazine, part of Booking.com.

In the interview, owners Christian and Denise explained how their hands-on approach to EMAS allowed them to integrate sustainability fully into their operations. From 100% renewable energy to local sourcing—over 80% of suppliers are within 35 km—their EMAS certification has both reduced operational costs and helped them stand out in the hospitality sector.

Why EMAS?

Inspired by an EMAS-certified supplier and encouraged by their Chamber of Commerce, Christian and Denise sought certification to meet rigorous, EU-wide standards. EMAS provided a structured yet adaptable framework, allowing them to measure their efforts in energy efficiency, waste management, and resource use, all benchmarks within the hospitality industry.

Positive Impacts

The benefits of EMAS have been clear: Hotel Fuchsbräu has seen significant cost savings in energy and waste, and the certification has become a strong differentiator in the market. Corporate clients increasingly prioritize sustainability in their proposals, and eco-conscious travellers are drawn to the hotels’ transparency and commitment to reducing environmental impact.

Advice for Businesses Considering EMAS

Christian and Denise encourage other hospitality businesses to approach EMAS as a team-led initiative. Their experience showed them that handling data collection and reporting in-house fosters both accountability and deeper engagement in sustainable practices. They view EMAS not only as a strategic asset but as an ethical framework that proves sustainability can be integral to business success.
