Sustainable Public Procurement: 2022 Global Review

The UN Environment Programme recently released its ‘Sustainable Public Procurement: 2022 Global Review’. The report aims to track global progress in sustainable procurement (SP) in recent years and provides insights into the current state of SP across national governments, private enterprises and intergovernmental organisations. 

This publication builds upon two previous SPP Global Reviews and explores the progress in SP over the last five years, highlighting important developments and emerging trends. The findings are based on a cross-cutting analysis of data collected from 314 organisations across 92 countries, 45 national governments, reviews of existing literature and interviews from experts. 

The review documents efforts to develop, implement and monitor SP policies and legal frameworks. It adds to the existing literature by (1) providing a global overview of the current state of SPP in national governments, (2) assessing progress towards UN Sustainable Development Goal 12.7 (Promote public procurement practices that are sustainable, in accordance with national policies and priorities), (3) identifying how private sector actors and intergovernmental organisations engage in SP, (4) expanding knowledge on drivers, barriers, needs and expectations around the world, (5) assessing how the COVID-19 pandemic has affected SP across organisation types and (6) illustrating how international organisations and networks support SP development.
