CD PROJEKT, a leading digital entertainment company known for its influential games such as The Witcher and Cyberpunk 2077, became the first games company to register to EMAS (EU Eco-Management and Audit Scheme) scheme. This certification shows the company's commitment to environmental stewardship and showcases CD PROJEKT's dedication to sustainable practices.

Path to EMAS Certification at CD PROJEKT

Founded almost three decades ago, CD PROJEKT has grown from a local video game distributor to a global player in game development and digital entertainment. Despite its rapid growth, the company has not compromised its commitment to sustainability. The transformation began four years ago when CD PROJEKT purchased a real estate complex in Warsaw to house its headquarters, which has since been developed into a "green campus". The campus has numerous environmentally friendly facilities, which are part of a comprehensive strategy to create a sustainable and healthy working environment for the company's employees. For example, 400 solar panels have been installed on the campus, generating an impressive 135 kWp, underlining CD PROJEKT's investment in renewable energy sources.

EMAS Certification

Obtaining EMAS certification required audits by an independent environmental verifier, a comprehensive review of the company's environmental policy and a thorough inventory of activities that have an impact on the environment. Małgorzata Kaźmierczak, the EMAS officer at CD PROJEKT, describes the advantages: "Deploying the EMAS system enables us to more effectively manage risks and opportunities related to environmental aspects of our operations, particularly where we have a significant impact."

The company's environmental policy integrated into every facet of its operations, adhering to stringent compliance with both ISO 14001 and EMAS standards. The release of CD PROJEKT’s first Environmental Statement in 2023 provided a detailed overview of the company’s approach to managing environmental and climate-related issues. This document is proof of their transparent and structured approach to sustainability, detailing the specific activities undertaken to mitigate their environmental impact. Key initiatives include reducing greenhouse gas emissions, conserving resources, and optimizing energy management across all operations.

Impacts and Achievement

CD PROJECT implemented a variety of sustainability activities, for instance deploying 400 solar panels with a combined peak power output of 135 kWp on the rooftops of their campus buildings in Warsaw. The deployment of solar panels and other energy-efficient technologies has not only reduced their operational costs but also significantly lowered their environmental impact. Since implementing its environmental initiatives, CD PROJEKT has seen tangible results. The EMAS Environmental Statement demonstrates that the direct and indirect GHG decreased in 2022 compared to 2021 emissions (Scope 1: 0,03 vs. 0,04 t CO2e/employee; Scope 2: 1,58 vs. 1,62 t CO2e/employee) due to a reduction in the amount of fuels consumed. Moreover, the company reduced the total mass of waste generated per employee (7,4 kg instead of 11,35 kg of waste per employee).

Outlook

CD PROJEKT's path to EMAS certification is a clear indicator of its leading role in sustainable business practices. As it is the first games company in Europe to reach this milestone, CD PROJEKT is in a position to encourage other companies in the industry to follow in its footsteps. With its EMAS registration, CD PROJEKT not only showcases its environmental policies and practices, but also shows the way for the gaming industry.
